Dubai private schools do not operate under a single KHDA-mandated absence limit. Instead, each school sets its own policies on authorised and unauthorised absence, medical documentation, and leave procedures. KHDA monitors attendance using benchmarks (98% Outstanding, 92% Acceptable, below 90% Very Weak) but these are school-assessment standards, not individual pupil allowances. Parents must notify schools immediately when a child cannot attend and provide supporting documentation—medical certificates are typically required for illness lasting more than one day. Persistent unexplained absence triggers escalation: if a student is away for more than two consecutive days without family contact, the school's safeguarding team intervenes. If contact cannot be established by day three, external authorities are notified under the school's Children Missing in Education procedures. Some schools flag 20 consecutive or 25 non-consecutive absence days in an academic year as thresholds for formal progression reviews or, in rare cases, withdrawal of enrolment. Repeated or unauthorised absence may be reviewed by pastoral and safeguarding teams, which assess both the pattern of absence and the child's welfare.
