Emirates Road gains 2 lanes from August 30; peak-hour trips cut by 25%

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is expanding a five-kilometre stretch of Emirates Road in the direction of Wadi Al Amardi, adding two lanes from Sunday, August 30. The number of lanes on the affected stretch will increase from six to eight, raising the road's capacity from 12,000 vehicles per hour to 16,000—a 33 per cent increase. Journey times during peak hours are expected to fall by up to 25 per cent. The expansion is timed ahead of schools reopening on August 31, when traffic between Sharjah and Dubai is expected to rise. Emirates Road carries more than 240,000 vehicles daily and is a major corridor connecting Dubai with the Northern Emirates.
