The Ministry of Health and Prevention has started implementing a resolution that sets caps on sodium, processed sugar, and fat in selected food products across the UAE. The measure aims to protect public health and reduce obesity and noncommunicable diseases linked to unhealthy food.
The resolution applies to packaged foods—both locally manufactured and imported—and food establishments in the UAE, including free-zone companies. It covers all stages of the food chain: production, manufacturing, preparation, processing, packaging, transport, import, storage, distribution, serving, display and sale.
The resolution sets two compliance phases extending until 31 December 2030. For the first group of products (leavened bread, flat bread, sweetened milk drinks, flavored yogurt, and salty snacks), food establishments must comply with first-phase maximum limits within nine months from the resolution's effective date, then gradually reduce to final-phase limits by year-end 2030. For the second group (processed cheese), establishments have two years and three months to reach first-phase limits, then must meet final-phase limits by 31 December 2030.
Stock manufactured or imported before the resolution takes effect may remain on sale for no more than one year from the effective date or until expiration, whichever is earlier.
