UAE launches Naseej textile recycling initiative — residents and businesses — collection begins now
The UAE has launched the Naseej initiative to divert 80 per cent of waste from landfill by 2031, with textile recycling as a priority focus; the programme targets the 220,000 tonnes of textile waste generated annually, 88 per cent of which currently ends up in landfill.

- What to do
- Residents: obtain Naseej collection bags (available at Yas Mall and other locations), fill with unwanted textiles, scan QR code, and arrange collection. Businesses and retailers: join the collection network and support segregation of textile waste from general refuse. All parties: separate textiles from food waste, paper, cardboard, and other contaminants to enable recycling.
The initiative, launched under the directives of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, forms part of the UAE's circular economy agenda and has already secured 14 private sector partners. Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri framed textile waste as an economic opportunity: the 220,000 tonnes discarded annually can be transformed into new products, industrial inputs, and materials for construction and other sectors. The immediate challenge is establishing collection networks and ensuring textiles are separated from general household waste before reaching landfill. Tadweer Group, the executing authority, plans to close 11 landfill sites within three years and is evaluating textile-recycling technologies and infrastructure requirements in partnership with international specialists.
