The Federal Tax Authority has launched an AI-powered platform that reduces VAT refund processing time for tourists from approximately nine days to one business day. The system is operational at Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi's Zayed International Airport and Sharjah International Airport. Tourists register by scanning their face and uploading passport and bank card images through Planet's mobile application. At the airport, visitors scan a QR code to initiate the refund process. The platform automatically checks transactions and determines whether purchases require inspection. Those without inspection requirements can complete claims directly through the app and select their preferred refund method. Purchases requiring inspection are directed to AI-powered smart gates using facial recognition. The platform includes multilingual support, automated invoice and travel verification, and fraud detection. The refund network now includes approximately 16,700 registered retail points of sale and 98 self-service kiosks. Since the scheme launched in 2018, approximately Dh4.2 billion in VAT refunds have been processed across 25 million transactions through October 2026.
