UAE under-15 social media ban reshapes school year as educators prepare for digital shift

As children return to classrooms for the new academic year, UAE schools are preparing for a shift in students' digital habits as new rules limiting social media access for those under 15 are expected to influence their wellbeing, concentration and social lives.

Education and mental health experts said the changes could bring benefits including fewer online distractions, reduced social comparison and greater engagement in face-to-face activities, but warned that some children may initially struggle with frustration, isolation or a fear of missing out.

For schools, the transition is likely to extend beyond simply reducing students' access to social platforms, with educators and parents expected to play a key role in helping children develop healthier digital habits and the skills needed to navigate social media responsibly when they are older.

Experts cautioned that while the restrictions could improve classroom concentration and sleep patterns, parents should present the changes as a lifestyle adjustment rather than punishment, giving children space to express concerns about social isolation. Schools and parents are encouraged to help children preserve offline friendships through phone calls and in-person meetings while maintaining digital literacy education on privacy, misinformation and online safety.
