Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has clarified that CBSE's new three-language policy will not apply retrospectively to students currently in Grades 7, 8, and 9. Those students may continue with their current language combination until Grade 10, even if they have chosen foreign languages. The policy will apply prospectively from Grade 6 starting July 1, 2026. CBSE also announced that third-language assessment at Grade 9 will be school-based only, with no Board Examination at Grade 10, and no student will be barred from Grade 10 exams due to the third language. Relaxations have been granted for schools outside India, including in the UAE and Gulf, as well as for foreign students returning to India and children with special needs.
