Private schools in Dubai must implement the safety requirements outlined in the KHDA compliance handbook across classrooms, playgrounds, pools, laboratories and transport operations.

Dubai private schools must now comply with detailed health and safety requirements outlined in the Knowledge and Human Development Authority's (KHDA) new compliance handbook. The handbook, launched Thursday as part of the Education 33 strategy, covers early childhood centres, private schools, higher education institutions and training institutes.

For younger students, all kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms must be on ground floors. Classrooms require natural light, proper ventilation, age-appropriate furniture free from sharp edges, and child finger-protection on doors. At least 30 percent of outdoor play areas must be shaded with canopies, and flooring under play equipment must be padded and shock-absorbent. A first-aid kit must be kept in a visible, accessible location.

Swimming pools must comply with Dubai Municipality specifications and be cleaned and sanitized at least every six months by an approved company. Pools must remain closed when no lifeguard is present. Lifeguards must hold valid training certificates, with numbers proportionate to student usage. Pool rules must display "No Diving" and "No Jumping" signs in Arabic and English.

Science laboratories require fume cupboards for volatile materials, with reactive chemicals stored separately in locked cabinets. Staff must be trained in safe chemical handling. Schools must provide personal protective equipment including gloves, safety goggles and lab coats. Licensed supervisors must be present during student pick-up and drop-off, and school buses must be licensed by the Roads and Transport Authority.
