KHDA issues detailed school placement rules for 2026-27 admissions

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority has published comprehensive guidelines for student placement in Dubai private schools from Pre-KG through Grade 9. For younger students (Pre-KG to KG2), age is the primary placement factor, with children required to reach specified ages by December 31 (for September-start schools) or March 31 (for April-start schools). For Grade 1 and above, transfer certificates become the main reference. The revised age cut-offs apply only to children registered in the KHDA system for the first time during 2026-27 and do not affect students already enrolled or transferring between schools. A one-time flexibility arrangement applies to children born between September 1 and December 31, 2022, allowing parents and schools to jointly decide between FS1 or FS2 entry. Children arriving from overseas may enter age-appropriate grades with additional learning support. Grade repetition is generally not permitted; schools must demonstrate sustained support, obtain professional assessment confirming developmental delay, and secure formal KHDA approval. Gifted children should receive enrichment within their existing age group rather than skip grades.
