UAE school admission age cut-off moves to December 31 for August-start schools

The UAE has updated its school admission-age rules, effective for new entrants in the 2026-27 academic year. Children entering Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 1 at schools starting in August will now be assessed against a December 31 cut-off date, while schools with an April academic year will continue using March 31. The new policy considers cognitive, social, emotional, language and motor development, with age as one factor among many. The Ministry of Education clarified that the policy applies only to new admissions for 2026-27 and does not affect children already enrolled. Transitional arrangements are available for some children who fell outside the previous eligibility window. Education professionals and medical experts emphasize that readiness involves more than birthdate—factors like independence in routines, communication skills, emotional regulation, and ability to separate from parents are critical indicators of school preparedness.
