Abu Dhabi's judicial authority has issued Resolution No. 43 of 2026 approving the Post-Separation Charter – Year of Family, a framework regulating parental relationships during family disputes and prioritizing children's welfare.
The charter consolidates a safe and stable family environment for children and ensures both parents continue to play an active role in their upbringing, based on the principle that dissolution of marriage does not end parenthood.
The charter obliges parents to cooperate in their children's moral, religious and educational upbringing, healthcare, and behavioural guidance. The custodial parent must keep the other parent informed of academic reports, health status and school activities, while both parties must cooperate on major decisions including education, medical treatment and travel.
Parents are required to refrain from disparaging the other parent in front of children, maintain respect for both parents, and avoid discussing divorce reasons in children's presence. The charter prohibits using children's legal rights, including visitation and maintenance, as pressure or bargaining tools.
To resolve disputes, parties must attempt amicable settlement first. If unsuccessful, disputes are referred to the Family Guidance Centre for reconciliation before court referral. The Family Guidance Counsellor presents the document to parents following separation for signature and commitment to implementation.
