The UAE's Fatwa Council has issued General Fatwa No. (11) of 2026 clarifying zakat obligations on date harvests. The zakat rate is 10 per cent of the entire harvest if irrigated by channels or rain at no cost to the owner, or 5 per cent if irrigated by wells or methods requiring expense. Zakat applies to all palm trees owned by a person, regardless of location or intended use. Payment must be made from the dates themselves or their value, and only after dates are fully ripe. For companies, zakat obligations differ: those owning palm farms or purchasing fruit before ripening must pay zakat on the crop; those purchasing after harvest treat dates as merchandise subject to 2.5 per cent zakat. The Council recommends paying zakat through accredited official bodies, including the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat.
